CDC Warns of Fungal Spread in Health Care Facilities

Data from 2020-2021 shows a doubling of Candida auris infections.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned the public this week of an increase of deadly fungal infections. The number of recorded cases of Candida auris infections rose from 756 recorded cases in 2020 to 1,471 in 2021. Officials expressed concerns over the number of cases that showed a particular resistance to echinocandins, a type of widely used antifungal drug.

The study group tracking the fungal strain did not include 2022 data in their findings, but the CDC independently recorded 2,377 confirmed cases of infection last year. Candida auris infections were first recorded in the United States in 2016 with a total of 53 cases.

“The rapid rise and geographic spread of cases is concerning and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance, expanded lab capacity, quicker diagnostic tests, and adherence to proven infection prevention and control,” stated study leader Dr. Meghan Lyman.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Rochelle Walensky and CDC officials as they track the cases of Candida auris.
  • For wisdom for nursing home and assisted living administrators and staff as they consider the risk of exposure for their residents.
